So, which country is leading in the medal standings after the first day of competition? Here's the latest update on the Olympic medal count, along with some highlights from Team USA's Day 1 performances.

The last Summer Olympics where the United States did not lead the gold medal tally was in 2008 in Beijing. Host nations typically see a boost in their medal count, and France is anticipated to nearly triple its gold medal haul from Tokyo.

**Team USA Highlights: Day 1**

**FIRST U.S. MEDAL**

Sunday featured 13 gold medal events, down from the planned 14 due to the postponement of Men’s Street Skateboarding until Monday because of rain.

How did Team USA kick off the Olympic competition? With a silver medal from Kassidy Cook and Sarah Bacon, known as "Cook'N Bacon." The longtime friends, who have been teammates since they were 8 years old, secured the silver in the women’s synchronized 3m springboard final.

This marked Team USA's first medal of the 2024 Games.

China claimed its first gold of the Games in the shooting mixed team air rifle event.

In the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, Australia turned the tables by claiming gold with a new Olympic record time of 3:28.92. Team USA took silver with an American record time of 3:30.20, while China earned the bronze.

The American medalists in the women’s relay were Simone Manuel, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, and Torri Huske.

**Katie Ledecky, Gretchen Walsh Shine**

In the individual finals, U.S. swimming star Katie Ledecky earned her 11th Olympic medal on Saturday, securing bronze in the 400m freestyle at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Ledecky finished with a time of 4:00.86, placing behind Australia’s Ariarne Titmus, who won gold with a time of 3:57.49, marking her second consecutive Olympic victory in the 400m.

Meanwhile, Connecticut's Gretchen Walsh set a new Olympic record in the women's 100m butterfly semifinals with a time of 55.38 seconds, coming close to her own world record of 55.18 seconds.

American teammate Torri Huske recorded the second-fastest semifinal time with 56.0 seconds.

The 100m butterfly final is scheduled for Sunday at 2:40 p.m. ET.
